Categories give readers a way to browse your knowledge base by topic instead of relying on search alone. Each category belongs to one knowledge base and can hold articles, subcategories, or both.
Create a category
- Check the knowledge base switcher in the admin sidebar. A new category belongs to whichever knowledge base is active when you create it, so switch first if you meant to add it somewhere else.
- Go to Categories and click Create Category.
- Fill in the form.
- Click Create Category.
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | The title readers see, for example "Getting Started". Required. |
| Description | A short summary shown on the category's public page. Optional. |
| Parent category | Defaults to None (Top Level). Pick an existing category to make this one a subcategory. The list only offers categories that can still hold children. |
| Icon | Click Choose icon, search the grid, and pick one. |
How deep categories can nest
Categories nest up to two levels below the top level. The Parent category picker offers top-level categories and the categories directly under them, so the deepest structure you can build is a top-level category, a category inside it, and a subcategory inside that. A category can never be nested under one of its own descendants.
The Categories list shows the structure with a Type chip on each row (Top level, Category, or Subcategory) and indents nested names beneath their parent.
On your public site, the home page lists your top-level categories, and each category's page lists the categories nested inside it along with its articles.
