A knowledge base is a separately published site with its own articles, categories, search, and settings. Most companies start with one, but you can create more: a public help center plus a private internal wiki, a developer docs site alongside your customer-facing help, or a changelog for product updates.
Create a knowledge base
- Go to Knowledge Bases in the admin sidebar.
- Click Create Knowledge Base.
- Fill in the form.
- Click Create.
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | Shown throughout the admin and, unless you override it in the knowledge base's appearance settings, on the public site. Required. |
| Slug | The URL segment for this knowledge base, after your company URL. Required. |
| Description | A note about what the knowledge base is for. Optional. |
| Type | Help center, Developer docs, or Changelog. See below. |
| Public | On: anyone can read it. Off: visitors must sign in as a member of your company. |
Choose the right type
Every knowledge base is one of three types, chosen when you create it.
| Type | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Help center | Support guides and articles | The only type your company's default knowledge base can be. |
| Developer docs | API reference and guides | Adds API references and documentation versions on top of articles. |
| Changelog | Product updates and releases | Has no AI chat agent. Requires a plan that includes the changelog feature; on other plans the option is locked with an Upgrade your plan note. |
Your company's default knowledge base is always a help center. When you are creating a knowledge base that would become the default, the Developer docs and Changelog options are disabled and the form explains why.
Switch between knowledge bases
Once you have more than one, use the knowledge base switcher at the top of the admin sidebar to jump between them. Articles, categories, Arrange, and the knowledge base's own settings all scope to whichever one is active.
