Using the editor: slash menu, bubble menu & block handles

Writing Articles3 min read · Updated 2 months ago

Three controls cover almost everything you do in the article editor. The slash menu inserts a block at the cursor, the bubble menu formats the text you have selected, and the block handle in the left gutter moves, converts, duplicates, or deletes a whole block. Once these feel natural, the rest of the editor follows.

The slash menu

  1. Put the cursor on an empty line and type /.
  2. Keep typing to filter the list (for example, /tab narrows it to Table).
  3. Press Enter, or click an entry, to insert it where the cursor is.

The menu lists every block type the editor supports:

EntryWhat it inserts
TextA plain paragraph
Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3Large, medium, and small section headings
Bulleted listAn unordered list
Numbered listAn ordered list
QuoteA block quotation
CalloutA highlighted info panel with a colour and icon
CodeA syntax-highlighted code block
TableA 3×3 table with a header row
ImageAn uploaded or embedded image
EmbedA YouTube, Vimeo, or Loom video
Feature cardAn icon, title, description, and optional screenshot
DividerA horizontal rule

The text-level entries are covered in Format text: headings, inline marks, links, lists & quotes. Images have their own article, Images: upload, paste, drag-drop, resize, alt text & captions, and the rest are in Rich blocks: callouts, code, tables, feature cards, embeds & dividers.

The bubble menu

Select any text and a small toolbar appears above the selection. It carries the inline marks (Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Highlight, Inline code) and the Link button. The bubble menu stays out of the way inside code blocks, where inline formatting does not apply.

The block handle

Hover over any block and a grip appears in the left gutter.

  • Drag the grip to move the block anywhere in the document.
  • Click the grip to open the block menu:
    • Turn into converts the block to another type: Text, Heading 1 to 3, Bulleted list, Numbered list, Quote, Callout, or Code.
    • Duplicate inserts a copy directly below.
    • Delete removes the block.
  • Click the + beside the grip to add an empty block below. Hold ⌘ (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) while you click to insert it above instead.
Turn into is the fastest way to fix structure after the fact: write everything as paragraphs, then convert the ones that should be headings or list items.
