Quick-start: set up your help center in 15 minutes

Getting Started2 min read · Updated 2 months ago

Your company workspace exists. This is the fastest route to a real, working help center your customers can use today.

The dashboard's Get set up checklist tracks four milestones (branding, your first published article, a support channel, and your first invite). The fuller path below covers those and the steps around them, in the order that saves you rework.

The seven steps

  1. Create your first knowledge base. A knowledge base is where your content lives. Pick Help center for customer-facing articles. You can add a Developer docs or Changelog knowledge base later, but a knowledge base's type cannot be changed once it is created, so choose deliberately. See Create a knowledge base & choose its type.
  2. Add a few categories. Organise before you write. Categories can be nested under a parent topic, so related articles sit together. See Create categories & subcategories.
  3. Write and publish your first article. Draft something your customers ask about most: a getting-started guide, an FAQ, a setup walkthrough. Publishing makes it live on your public help center. See Write your first article.
  4. Brand it. Set the knowledge base's colour, logo, and hero text so it reads as your product rather than a template. See Customize your knowledge base's appearance.
  5. Invite your team. Bring in the people who will write docs and answer support requests, and assign roles as you go. See Invite team members (email or single-use link).
  6. Connect a custom domain. Serve the help center from your own domain, such as help.yourcompany.com, instead of a helpbento.com subdomain. See Set up a custom domain: add, DNS records, verify & remove.
  7. Go live. Share the link, add it to your product's footer, and point your support channels at it.
Nothing here is a one-shot setup. You can keep adding articles, categories, and team members at any time, and the order above is only the quickest route to something useful on day one.

After the basics

Once the help center is live, turn on the AI Chat Widget and the Inbox. Together they cover the questions your published articles do not answer yet: the widget answers from your content, and the inbox catches everything else.
