Customize your knowledge base's appearance

Branding & Appearance5 min read · Updated 2 months ago

Every knowledge base has its own Appearance page, so a public help center, a developer docs site and a changelog can each look different while sharing one company account. Open the knowledge base you want to style, go to its settings and choose Appearance. Changes save automatically as you leave each field, and a live preview at the bottom of the Brand card shows the result in light and dark.

Appearance
Knowledge base appearance
Give each knowledge base its own name, logo, colour, font and layout, with a live preview in light and dark.

The page has four cards, in this order: Brand, the navigation links card, Layout and Footer.

Brand

Name

The name shown in the knowledge base switcher and wherever this knowledge base is linked. Changing it does not change the knowledge base's URL.

By default the knowledge base uses your company logo. Upload an image here to give this knowledge base its own; remove it to fall back to the company logo again. A square image around 256×256 works best. PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG, up to 10 MB.

Favicon

A square image shown in the browser tab of your public site. PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG, up to 10 MB. Leave it empty to keep the default HelpBento favicon.

Primary Color

The accent colour for links, buttons and highlights on the public site. A knowledge base inherits your company brand colour until you pick a preset or enter a hex value of its own. To go back to inheriting, click Use company colour.

The preview below the fields checks your colour as link text against both backgrounds and tells you whether it meets WCAG AA (a 4.5:1 ratio). Button text adjusts automatically, so a low-contrast warning only concerns links.

Font

The body font for the public site. Every option is bundled with HelpBento or is a system font, so nothing loads from an external font service.

OptionWhat readers get
HelpBento default (Nunito)The standard look
System UIThe reader's operating-system font
InterA neutral sans-serif
Quicksand (rounded)A softer, rounded sans-serif
Georgia (serif)A classic serif

Theme

OptionWhat it does
DefaultThe standard HelpBento look, in light and dark
High contrastStronger text, borders and focus rings that meet WCAG AA+ in both light and dark

High contrast re-skins only the neutral colours. Your brand colour, logo and font still apply, and the content is identical, so you can switch between the two at any time without touching your articles.

Hero Subtitle

The line shown under your name on the help center home page, between 30 and 200 characters. This field only appears for help center knowledge bases; developer docs and changelogs do not render a hero.

Preview

Use the Light and Dark buttons to see how your logo, colour and font read on each background. Check both before you share the site: readers' devices decide which one they see.

Search is always available on your public site, so this card only manages links. Its name depends on where the links render:

Knowledge baseCard nameWhere links appear
Help center, Classic layoutHeaderThe site header
Help center, Sidebar layoutSidebarThe bottom of the navigation sidebar
Developer docsSidebar linksThe bottom of the docs sidebar
ChangelogChangelogNo links; this card holds the feed's title and subtitle instead

You can add up to 3 links. To add one:

  1. Click Add link.
  2. Enter a Label (up to 50 characters).
  3. Choose a Type: Article, External URL or Knowledge base.
  4. Pick the target: a published article, a URL starting with https://, or another of your knowledge bases (any type, including a changelog).
  5. Optionally choose an Icon.

Remove a link with the trash icon on its row.

To send readers from your help center to your changelog, add a Knowledge base link that points at the changelog. The label is yours to choose, for example "What's new".

Layout

Help center knowledge bases can read in one of two ways. Developer docs and changelogs always use their own fixed layouts, so this card is hidden for them.

LayoutWhat readers see
ClassicA hero, a card grid of categories and a centred single-column article view
SidebarA documentation-style three-pane view: a sticky top bar, a persistent navigation tree on the left, the article in the middle and an "On this page" outline on the right

Switching layout changes only presentation. Your categories, articles and links stay exactly as they are, and you can switch back at any time.

Show HelpBento branding controls the small "Powered by HelpBento" badge at the bottom of your public site. Turning it off requires a plan that includes white label; see Show or hide "Powered by HelpBento" branding.
