Import from Notion

Importing Content2 min read · Updated 2 months ago

Import your existing Notion docs into HelpBento with the import wizard. You connect with an internal Notion connection's access token, share the pages you want with that connection, and the wizard turns pages into articles and sub-page containers into categories.

Connect your workspace

  1. Go to notion.so/developers/connections and click Create connection. Name it, set Authentication method to Access token (not OAuth), pick your workspace, and create it.
  2. On the connection's Configuration tab, copy its Access token. Leave Read content enabled under Capabilities.
  3. Share your docs with the connection: open the top-level page in Notion, click the ••• menu, choose Connections, and add yours. Sharing a page shares its sub-pages too.
  4. In HelpBento, go to Settings > Migrations, click Start Import on the Notion card, paste the token into Notion access token, and click Validate Connection.
A Notion connection can only see pages that have been explicitly shared with it. If you skip step 3, validation succeeds but finds no pages, and the wizard shows "no pages are shared with this connection yet". Share the page in Notion, then click Reconnect.

How pages map

In Select Pages, tick the shared pages you want to import from. Within each one:

In NotionIn HelpBento
A page with no sub-pagesAn article
A direct child page that contains sub-pagesA category; that page and all its descendants become the articles inside it
Direct child pages with no sub-pagesArticles in a category named after the page you selected
A selected page with no sub-pages at allAn article in a category called "Imported from Notion"

Notion blocks are converted to the HelpBento editor format and images are re-hosted in HelpBento. Child-page blocks inside a page are skipped, because those pages import as their own articles.

Status after import

Notion pages have no published or draft state, so Notion imports always land as drafts regardless of anything in Notion. That gives you a chance to review formatting before anything goes live, and it means all pages are ticked by default in the preview.
