A custom domain is not limited to a single knowledge base. You can serve several from the same domain, each at its own URL, and choose which one greets visitors at the root.
Root versus path-based knowledge bases
| Assignment | URL |
|---|---|
| The root knowledge base | https://yourdomain.com/ |
| Every other assigned knowledge base | https://yourdomain.com/its-slug |
The rules that apply:
- One domain per knowledge base. A knowledge base can be assigned to only one of your domains at a time. In the domain's checklist, a knowledge base already on another domain is greyed out with an Assigned to note naming that domain.
- Public only. Custom domains serve public knowledge bases. Private ones are not offered, and a knowledge base that goes private is removed from its domain automatically.
- One knowledge base means it is the root. The Serve at the domain root picker only appears once two or more knowledge bases are ticked. With a single one, it serves at the root without a choice to make.
- No root is an option. With several assigned, you can pick No root, visitors land on the first assigned KB instead of naming one.
Assign from the Domains page
Company-wide assignment lives under Settings > Domains: open a domain's row, tick the knowledge bases under Assign knowledge bases, pick the root, and click Save changes. The full setup flow, including DNS verification, is in Set up a custom domain: add, DNS records, verify & remove.
Assign from a knowledge base's own settings
When you are already inside a knowledge base, you can assign it without leaving.
- Open the knowledge base's settings from the sidebar and choose Custom domain.
- Pick a domain from the Assign to domain dropdown, or leave it unassigned.
- Turn Serve at the domain root on to make this the root, or leave it off to serve at
/its-slugon that domain. - Click Save. Use Discard changes to back out.
If making this knowledge base the root would displace another one, the page tells you: This will replace "Other name" as the root of that domain.
This is the same assignment as the checklist on the Domains page, scoped to one knowledge base at a time.
